Georgia Trustees has been around as long as Georgia itself and today is the highest award the state can bestow. The Georgia Historical Society, in conjunction with the Governor's Office reestablished Georgia Trustees as a way to honor Georgians whose achievements and community service reflect those of the founding body. Join the Georgia Historical Society and other leaders in the state to induct the 2024 Georgia Trustees: Ms. Carol Tome (CEO of UPS) and Dr. Louis Sullivan (17th Secretary of Health and Human Services and founding Dean of Morehouse School Medicine), on April 27, 2024 in Savannah. This elegant evening will include cocktails, dinner and a lively discussion with the inductees, two exemplary Georgians who have made history and served the state.
Dr. Louis W. Sullivan served as president of Morehouse School of Medicine for over two decades. MSM was the first predominantly Black medical college in the United States to be established in the 20th century. He was appointed founding dean and Director of the Medical Education Program at Morehouse College, which later became The School of Medicine at Morehouse College.
Dr. Sullivan resigned from MSM in 1989 after accepting a presidential appointment. Bush appointed Dr. Sullivan as the 17th Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He led national efforts to improve health and health behaviors of Americans.
